Reflection of Mae Kha

Reflection of Mae Kha is an ambitious yet humble project by Chiang Mai-based artist Anusorn Tunyapalit who turns our attention to the ecology of Chiang Mai’s historical waterway – Mae Kha canal. Ambitious for its drawing on cross-disciplinary knowledge: humanities and science, however humble for its scale and approach of presenting micro-stories. The project engages with two different types of spaces – the social and the art – by manifesting into two parts: an immersive moving-image projection by the Mae Kha canal during the annual Loy Krathong festival and followed by an exhibition at the Asian Culture Station.
Mae Kha, excavated in the 13th century during the Lan Na Kingdom, connects water from Doi Suthep mountain and passes through Chiang Mai city before discharging into Ping River. For centuries, it served the critical military, socio-political, cultural and agricultural functions for Chiang Mai city. However, over the last four decades particularly, the once clear canal has gradually suffered intense degradation due to urban transformation, unregulated housing, and pollution, making it become a dumping site and sewage of the city.
There have been many efforts in raising and tackling the issues of Mae Kha canal by various groups including urbanists, artists, as well as social and environmental groups. Anusorn returns to this recurring topic yet brings forward a refreshing reflection and artistic experimentation. Over the course of six months, the artist has engaged with a scientist, students, and community groups along Mae Kha in researching the environmental, social, and psychological impacts of the canal. Performing different roles of an experimenter, the artist collected micro-specimens from the canal water, soil along the canal, and stories from the surrounding communities.
These collected matters, both tangible and intangible, were then examined and transformed into new lives. The microscopic image of biological cells was enlarged into an immersive moving-image. Inspired by a local practice of detoxification of fish from the canal before consuming, the artist who is also a ceramist by training tested the canal mud and made it into pottery. A video documentary weaves together a story of the canal with various voices of those whose lives are immediately affected by it.
Anusorn’s work reminds us there is always life at every corner of the earth, even though at the dirtiest place, and it is possible to re-envision. His works in Reflection of Mae Kha point to the interdependency among nature, human, and built environment. They not only offer a moment of sensorial and intellectual reflection but also propose a process of transformation. Micro, almost invisible, biological substances become large and confronting; contaminants become ceramics for serving; stories from the communities are animated and retold. The artist remediates information and re-presents it in new mediums in order to heighten our senses to the topics and matters that we have been so immune to, introducing re-sensitivity and new experiences.
Reflection of Mae Kha marks Anusorn’s consolidation of his multi-faceted practice, that is brought into life to transform life. He turns to the basics of the ecology of human and their environment – the earth, the water and the people who interact with them. This offers a hope for re-imagination of a new life that is based on small yet transformative matters and stories, and this process is grounded on a cross-disciplinary approach that transcends boundaries between the social and the art.
Reflection of Mae Kha เป็นโครงการที่ทั้งห้าวหาญแล้วก็ถ่อมตัวอยู่ในทีของศิลปิน อนุสรณ์ ธัญญะปาลิต ผู้ใช้ชีวิตอยู่ในเชียงใหม่ ครั้งนี้เขาได้พาเราไปสำรวจนิเวศวิทยาของ “คลองแม่ข่า” ทางนํ้าเก่าแก่ของเมืองนี้ โดยในส่วนของความห้าวหาญนั้นอยู่ที่การที่งานได้ตัดข้ามพรมแดนความรู้ไปทั้งในด้านมนุษยศาสตร์และด้านวิทยาศาสตร์ แต่ในทางกลับกันก็ได้แสดงความถ่อมตนออกมาด้วยขนาดและการนำเสนอเรื่องของสิ่งเล็กจิ๋ว โครงการนี้ได้ใช้พื้นที่ที่ต่างกันไปสองในทาง คือ ทางสังคม และ ทางศิลปะ โดยแบ่งการแสดงงานออกเป็นสองรอบ รอบแรกจะเป็นการฉายภาพเคลื่อนไหว ณ ริมคลองแม่ข่า ในวันลอยกระทง และอีกรอบที่ตามมานั้นจะเป็นนิทรรศการที่ Asian Culture Station
คลองแม่ข่า ถูกขุดเพิ่มเติมไว้ใช้งานในปลายพุทธศตวรรษที่ 19 ยุคอาณาจักรล้านนา เพื่อเชื่อมแหล่งนํ้าจากดอยสุเทพผ่านลงมายังเมืองเชียงใหม่ก่อนจะไหลออกไปสู่แม่นํ้าปิง มันมีความสำคัญอย่างยิ่งยวดในการหล่อเลี้ยงเมืองเชียงใหม่ทั้งในด้านการทหาร สังคม-การเมือง วัฒนธรรม และเกษตรกรรม มาตลอดหลายศตวรรษที่ผ่านมา แต่ในช่วง 40 ปีมานี้ นํ้าคลองที่เคยใสสะอาดกลับค่อยๆ ขุ่นหมองและเสื่อมลงจากความเปลี่ยนแปลงของเมือง การสร้างที่อยู่อาศัยกันอย่างไร้การควบคุม และมลภาวะ ซึ่งได้เปลี่ยนให้คลองแม่ข่ากลายเป็นทางระบายนํ้าเสียของเมืองไป
หลายฝ่ายได้พยายามหาทางผลักดันประเด็นและเข้ามาแก้ปัญหาของคลองแม่ข่า ทั้งนักวางผังเมือง ศิลปิน รวมไปถึงกลุ่มคนทำงานทางด้านสังคมและสิ่งแวดล้อม อนุสรณ์ได้หวนกลับไปยังปัญหาที่ยังคงอยู่นี้โดยได้เสนอออกมาเป็นภาพสะท้อนที่สดใหม่และการทดลองในทางศิลปะ กว่าหกเดือนที่ศิลปินคนนี้ได้ร่วมมือกับนักวิทยาศาสตร์ นักเรียน และชุมชนต่างๆ ตามแนวคลองแม่ข่า ทำการวิจัยผลกระทบทางสิ่งแวดล้อม สังคม และจิตวิทยาที่มีต่อลำนํ้าสายนี้ ศิลปินได้สวมบทบาทนักวิจัยหลายแบบทำการเก็บตัวอย่างจุลชีพจากนํ้าคลอง เก็บดินริมคลอง และรวมรวมเรื่องเล่าจากชุมชนโดยรอบ
สิ่งเหล่านี้ทั้งที่จับต้องได้และไม่ได้ ถูกเก็บรวบรวมมาทดสอบและแปรรูปไปสู่ชีวิตใหม่ในแบบต่างๆ ภาพเซลล์ของจุลชีพที่ส่องด้วยกล้องจุลทรรศน์ได้รับการนำมาขยายเป็นงานภาพเคลื่อนไหว วิธีการที่ชาวบ้านล้างพิษในตัวปลาจากลำคลองก่อนนำมาบริโภคได้สร้างแรงบันดาลใจให้ศิลปินผู้ฝึกฝนงานทางเซรามิกมาด้วย นำเอาโคลนตมในคลองมาตรวจสอบและปั้นเป็นภาชนะดินเผา และสุดท้ายเรื่องราวต่างๆ ของคลองจากปากคำผู้ได้รับผลกระทบจากมัน ก็ได้ถักทอร้อยเรียงกันเป็นหนังสารคดีขึ้นมาเรื่องหนึ่ง
งานของอนุสรณ์ได้เตือนเราให้ตระหนักถึงการมีอยู่ของชีวิตในทุกหนทุกแห่งบนโลกแม้แต่ในที่ที่สกปรกที่สุดก็ตาม ทั้งยังเผยความเป็นไปได้ที่เราจะหาทางกลับมามองเห็นชีวิตเหล่านั้นกันได้อีกครั้ง ผลงานของเขาใน Reflection of Mae Kha นั้น ชี้ไปยังการพึ่งพาอาศัยกันระหว่าง ธรรมชาติ มนุษย์ และสิ่งแวดล้อมที่ถูกสร้างขึ้น ซึ่งไม่ได้มอบเพียงขณะเวลาแห่งการไตร่ตรองความคิดและความรู้สึกให้เราเท่านั้น แต่ยังเสนอกระบวนการเพื่อความเปลี่ยนแปลงด้วย มันมีสิ่งเล็กๆ เล็กจนแทบมองไม่เห็นอย่างสารทางชีวภาพที่ขยายร่างใหญ่ยักษ์มาประจันหน้ากับเรา สิ่งปนเปื้อนที่ถูกเปลี่ยนไปเป็นภาชนะสำหรับเสิร์ฟอาหาร และเรื่องเล่าจากชุมชนจะถูกรื้อฟื้นคืนชีวิตขึ้นมาเล่าใหม่ ศิลปินได้สอบทานข้อมูลและนำมาเสนอใหม่ในสื่อใหม่เพื่อระเบิดสำนึกต่อประเด็นและสถานการณ์ที่เราชาด้านกับมันไปแล้ว เปิดทางให้สร้างสำนึกใหม่และมอบประสบการณ์ใหม่ให้กับเรา
Reflection of Mae Kha คือการหลอมรวมปฏิบัติการทางศิลปะหลากหลายรูปแบบของอนุสรณ์เข้าด้วยกัน แล้วนำเข้ามาสู่ชีวิต เพื่อให้ชีวิตเปลี่ยนแปลงต่อไปได้ เขาย้อนกลับไปยังพื้นฐานของระบบนิเวศวิทยาของคนกับสิ่งแวดล้อม ทั้งดิน นํ้า และผู้คนที่มีปฏิสัมพันธ์กับมัน ทั้งยังได้มอบความหวังให้กับการจินตนาการถึงชีวิตใหม่ขึ้นมาจากเหตุการณ์และเรื่องราวเล็กๆ แต่พลิกแพลงได้หลากหลาย แม้กระนั้นทั้งหมดนี้ มันมีพื้นฐานอยู่บนการบูรณาการศาสตร์ที่สลายพรมแดนระหว่างสังคมกับศิลปะ
